Accountability is probably one of the most misunderstood concepts in American business today. In many organizations, phrases like “holding people accountable” imply negative consequences or punishment, rather than rewards or recognition. My experience taught me that there are three faces of accountability.
1. Accountability to oneself by making an ongoing commitment to growing and developing self, for the sole purpose of growing and developing others. It’s a commitment to oneself by…
> Using the power of feedback to dial-in areas for opportunity and self reflection.
> Aligning words with action by making and honoring commitments.
> Communicating with purpose, clarity and meaning using “The WHY” behind the decisions we make and the messages we deliver.
> Embracing vulnerability with courage, knowledge with wisdom, and mistakes with learning, knowing that our failures are the precursors to innovation and discovery.
> Living, breathing and modeling the values of the organization.
2. Accountability to others by leading with the model of Servant Leadership and the power of putting others first. It’s a commitment to others by…
> Leading with kindness, humility, and empathy.
> Empowering others to think, act, and make decisions on their own.
> Serving others with a laser focus on the customer experience.
> Inspiring others to teach us how to lead them.
3. Accountability to the organization by aligning purpose with mission and vision. It’s a commitment to the organization by…
> Achieving sustainable results through an inspired and engaged workforce in the pursuit of meaningful work.
> Creating ‘Psychologically Safe Environments’ where everyone has a voice.
> Cultivating a culture of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion and the belief that were are the strongest when we embrace and celebrate our differences.
> Fostering Relationships. “When we focus on other people we open a window. Through that window, we discover common ground. From that common ground, relationships are built.” Bill Brovsky
